IT’S TOO LATE TO PANIC!
Some institutions have always intended to go for the Standardised approaches, and now need to start thinking about what that actually entails: What resources are required (both compliance and technology resources)? How long will it take? What is the opportunity cost of designing and building an in-house solution, versus buying a solution? Do credible external solutions exist? Etc…
 
DO YOU HAVE THE TIME TO BUILD IT?
Other institutions have intended to go for the more advanced IRB approaches. Many of these have met with delays, for a variety of reasons: data deficiencies are one very common cause; poor–quality external advice or products are another. And many institutions have simply underestimated the sheer size and scope of what’s required to become an IRB institution within the required time frame, and will need additional time to fully meet demanding IRB standards; or they are uncomfortably uncertain about how stringent their regulator will be in insisting on applying the spirit, as well as the letter, of Basel II, across all three Pillars
 
CAN YOU RISK NOT HAVING A ‘PLAN B’?
In either case the risk of non-compliance must be fully mitigated.
